The Socioeconomic scope of Youth Work in Europe

The Partnership between the European Commission & the Council of Europe aims to bring youth work and non-formal learning within youth activities to the foreground, to increase the visibility and recognition of youth work and to elaborate the significance of youth work within the Third Sector. In order to do so it is crucial to enhance knowledge and understanding of investment in youth activities through the gathering, analysis and evaluation of data relevant to this objective.

Therefore a major study on the socio-economic scope of youth work has been commissioned by the Partnership and carried out by the Institut für Sozialarbeit und Sozialpädagogik. The study is in line with previous efforts in this field; efforts that were initiated by a joint working paper in 2004 (Pathways towards Validation and Recognition of non-formal and informal learning in the youth field ) and followed by a research seminar and publication in 2005/06 . It is a follow-up activity of the literature reviews on the economic dimension and value of youth non-formal learning.

Aims of the study

Although there is a wide range and diversity of youth work experiences in European countries, at the moment there is only limited specific information available on this sector. The aim of the study was therefore to provide a comparative overview and analysis of youth activities, especially regarding
  • the sectors of specific and related youth activities
  • the money and time invested in them;
  • the number of people employed and
  • the young people participating in these activities.

These areas were investigated by an international consortium of researchers/institutions coordinated by the Insitut für Sozialarbeit und Sozialpädagogik (Frankfurt am Main). They covered the following 10 countries: Austria, Estonia, Germany,Greece,Ireland, Italy, Netherlands, Norway, Romania and Spain.

The study can be downloaded as a whole here and  consulted by chapters:
